"Alice Austen (1866 - 1952). Austen was one of America's earliest and most prolific female photographers, and over the course of her life she captured about 8,000 images. Though she is best known for her documentary work, Austen was an artist with a strong aesthetic sensibility. Furthermore, she was a landscape designer, a master tennis player, and the first woman on Staten Island to own a car. She never married, and instead spent fifty years with Gertrude Tate. A rebel who broke away from the ties of her Victorian environment, Alice Austen created her own independent life." Alice Austen House Museum
For more about Alice Austen visit www.aliceausten.org. You can visit her home on Staten Island, which is now a historically landmarked museum.
In 1976, DYKE, A Quarterly (the magazine I co-published and co-edited) was the first publication anywhere in the world to recognize Alice as a Lesbian, in a feature article about her photographs and her life with her partner, Gertrude Tate.
This magazine cover has been featured at The Museum Of The City Of New York, in their exhibition Gay Gotham. A framed enlarged print - the same print I offer here - now hangs at The Alice Austen House Museum in Staten Island.
